Friend From Afar Poem by Dan Brown

Friend From Afar

Rating: 2.8

I’d like to get to know you.
To understand you, and be your friend.
But every emotion you ever show,
is a child just playing “pretend”.
Your eyes hold such mystery,
and you never say all that much.
I know there’s something inside you,
that you won’t let anyone touch.

There are so many barriers,
preventing anyone getting near.
But I will break those barriers down,
and discover what it is you fear.

Walls.
A wall of ice.
Coldness, hardness and emotionless.
Followed by a wall of fire,
hotter than Hell yet never melting the ice.
It is anger and pain, licking at the hands of all who get close.
Lastly,
sadly,
a wall of steel.
Blandess, blankness and indifference.
Riveted shut by the hands of those who have hurt you,
and completely impenetrable.

Don’t build these walls on my account.
I only want to be your friend.
I want to see, and nurture, your real emotions,
not a child just playing “pretend”

I understand, though, if you do,
because I know that’s how it must be.
One day, though, you’ll wished you’d opened up,
and set your problems free.
I’d like to get to know you,
to understand you, and who you are.
But until the day you let me in,
I will be a friend from afar.
