Freedom? Poem by Elizabeth Tyrrell

Freedom?

You say I have the freedom
To love who I want
But how can that be true
When so many people do not
How can I have that freedom
When others don't
Because the person they love
Is of the same gender
You scrutinize them
For who they love
So how do I have the freedom
To love who I want
If they do not
Is that what you call freedom
Because it doesn't sound like freedom
To me or them

You say I have the freedom
To go where I want
And live where I please
But how can that be true
When so many people do not
How can I have that freedom
When others don't
Because they came here 'illegally'
You send them back from where they came
Searching for help
So how do I have the freedom
To go where I want
And live where I please
If they do not
Is that what you call freedom
Because it doesn't sound like freedom
To me or them

You say I have the freedom
To speak my mind
But how can that be true
When so many people do not
How can I have that freedom
When others don't
Because what they're saying
Is disturbing and almost cruel
So how do I have the freedom
To speak my mind
If they do not
Is that what you call freedom
Because it doesn't sound like freedom
To me or them

You say we all have freedom
To do what we have the right to do
But how can that be true
When we do not
Have the rights we were all given
You say we have our freedom
But the truth is
The only people who do
Are people like you
Is that what you call freedom
Because it doesn't sound like freedom
To me or them
