For My Father Poem by Jeff Stoddart

For My Father

For fourty years I always thought my father was the best
For fourty years a shining light, passed each and every test,
For fourty years we lived a lie since he and I began
It took his death for me to feel the miseries of man.

He never said he loved me, he never hugged me tight
And never put his hand in mine, it never felt quite right
He never kissed away the tears of pain, when I was ill
He never sang his song for me.....and now he never will.

His father many years before, must share some of the blame
he never said he loved his son when to this world he came
He never hugged, nor held his hand big boys must never cry
How many men must bear that shame from birth, until they die....?

I've often wondered how it was that I could never show
Emotion, grief, and loneliness, heart ache fear and woe
But try and try and try again the tears would never come
And I would let my anger out in silence..and alone
The only solace was my pain, a masochistic streak,
A substitute for loving him, a balm for all my grief
Some of the fault must lie with me, i never once complained, I never told him of my needs, perhaps I felt ashamed,
I never said 'I love you dad' I never hugged him tight
Never put his hand in mine, it never felt just right.
I wish he could come back to me, of course he never can
And i'm condemned to ponder on the fraielties of man
To sons and fathers everywhere, don't let your feelings wait
Today's the time to tell them, tomorrow.....much too late.

'Death ends a life but it also ends a relationship which struggles on in the survivors mind towards some resolution that it may never find, what does it matter if I never loved my father or he never loved me....? Well believe me whenever I see or hear the word Father........it matters.'
