For Freedom Poem by Apuna Rato

For Freedom

I’m a patriotic; I abided the calls of motherland
I am good citizen and so risked my life.
I went deep into jungle and hunted enemies,
Burnt down the villages and subdued our rivals.
They were butchered, tortured and shoot dead
Like animals. I did my job very well.
I too beaten hundreds of men folk
For there were few sympathizer among them
I raped the women, in fact men as well
For it soothed our furious anger.
Each day brought new victory as
More villages we razed to the ground.
Excitement grew stronger as moaning of men
And wailing of women grew louder.
Every expedition so successful,
Every success so encouraging
For we realized how well-disciplined
We were to inflict defeats upon savage Nagas.
I feared no consequences, I knew
Their cries would be just a whisper and
The world would passed by, unheard of
What they called ‘Violation of Human Rights’.
Now I can feel the beat of drums and trumpet
For us to welcome home. I know for certain,
Father would smile, “Well done my son.
See, we have Freedom for they are caged.
Our assignment accomplished and now
Test the taste of Freedom, my Hero.”
