Flower Shop Story Poem by Sana Olivia Hernandez

Flower Shop Story

Rating: 5.0

A single, beautiful,
Pure white rose.
I hold it gently in my hand.
Never expecting light to shine where I stand,
Illuminating a diamond wedding band.

This must be a dream,
I think, for I had never loved before.
Before the man in beautiful light,
Walked in to my little flower store.

A lavender rose blooms,
We are still,
Neither moves.

Not one word is spoken,
Not one breath taken.
For now we simply are,
Two halves of one another.
But will we still be together if and when I awaken?

A simple hello,
Rosemary scent lingers.
The vibrant color of orange rose is soon noticed.

A simple touch,
The touch of a tulip.
Red poppies all about.

A day,
A smile,
A week,
A kiss.
A primrose soon follows.

A year,
Then two.
Season after season.

Spring's first daisy.
Summer's honeysuckle.
Fall's oak leaf.
Winter's ivy.
All tied together with a red tulip

A blooming rose's thorns appear.
One of which pricks my ring finger...
And mistakes are made.
From silence to shouting.
Followed by the scent of rue.

A jealous eye glares.
A black rose is soon there,
To kill every flower in my shop.

Roses are ripped
Violets are crushed.
My life and love are no more.
Greedily the black rose stole more than it bargained for.

All that remains is aloe, chestnut, and small seeds of bird's foot trefoil.
On the cold, hard wooden shell,
I place a bouquet of forget-me-nots and marigold.
And whisper farewell.
My tears silently water my lost love and flowers.
Deep underneath the cold, dead earth.

A single, beautiful,
Pure white rose.
I hold it gently in my hand.
Never expecting light to shine where I stand,
Illuminating a diamond wedding band.

This must be a dream,
I think, for I had never loved before.
Before the man in beautiful light,
Walked in to my little flower store.

I have been enjoying the scent of lilacs and violets wafting over my patio for the past two weeks. Scent is such an elusive sensation I almost have to see the flower as well to believe the aroma is real. But this poem makes all senses come alive! This passage A SIMPLE HELLO/ROSEMARY SCENT LINGERS/THE COLOR OF ORANGE ROSE IS SOON NOTICED. That's three sensory impressions almost at once - sound, scent, sight. And later A SINGLE BEAUTIFUL/PURE WHITE ROSE and you're suddenly standing in L-I-G-H-T!

I have to comment on this wonderful line: NEVER EXPECTING THE LIGHT TO SHINE WHERE I STAND. That line conveys multiple meanings 1) Your speaker is charmingly humble, she doesn't think she is entitled to special treatment, but that very humility makes her worthy.2) The light comes from a source outside of her. It may come from the man himself; it's a sign he is ready for true love, and that he can shower the two of them with that truth. This is what makes Romantic Love so persuasive.3) The light comes from a source within her. I think it does! In a sense, the flowers symbolize this light as well because without the light they absorb they would wilt. Flowers are containers of light, both the physical light (photosynthesis) and the spiritual light that illuminates the good people and good things. That's what flowers do in your poem - illuminate!

This is such an exceptional poem on many levels that it will take me several readings over as many days to fully absorb it. I have ready read it twice. The first reading carried me along much further than I expected to go. Instead of giving a slice of life, you gave us the whole of it, which in this case includes the reversal of fortune, the loss of what promised to be an ideal life (not perfect - that's not possible - but ideal, which is attainable if both people strive for it) . I was heartened by the repetition of the beginning at the end: THE BAD STUFF WAS A DREAM - there is once again the possibility of a genuine happiness. (I'm going to the next Message Box.)
