Flesh Versus Spirit Poem by Chris Jibero

Flesh Versus Spirit

Earth’s language is earthly
Boisterous like a megaphone
Deployed to breed stress
Sated with sound and commotion
Replete with motion without progress
Keeping earth-bound flesh
In captivity’s monumental thrash
Of lust and gruesome affectation
Sights, sounds and feelings of delusion
And destruction
Displaying its brilliant colours
In adultery and fornication
Idolatry, witchcraft and lasciviousness
Hatred, variance, emulation and drunkenness
Strife, sedition, heresy, profanity and wickedness
Envy, fraud, revelling, murder, effeminacy and seduction
Lesbianism, sodomy, extortion, lies, greed, larceny and the likes
Huge Jericho walls against a smooth walk to the Kingdom of Heaven

But to those, the wise would choose to be blind
Deaf, dumb and numb
Working out their faith in daily devotion
For the language of the Spirit is heavenly
Cute and lovely
Small, still, noiseless and lively
Adequately distributing life-giving fruits
Love
Joy
Peace
Longsuffering
Gentleness
Goodness
Faith
Forgiveness
Temperance
Forthrightness
Truth and the like
Gates of righteousness
Ways and means to our heavenly flight
Whose fare has been paid
By the munificent Lamb of God.
