First Of Which We'Re Fond

Echo Helstrom was the name
of the first girlfriend of Bob
in Hibbing, dreaming less of fame
than of the ways to cause a throb
in his own heart, and his first woody
may well have been with her, although
he changed to Guthrie as his buddy,
bound for “Bound for Glory” show.
Hank Williams, Little Richard and
Leadbelly and Odetta were
some others who gave him a hand
to make his inspiration stir,
and Echo maybe was forgotten,
though first loves rare are. I think
barmitzvah time must have been rotten
for him, or he’d have kept a link
with Jews. He chose to range beyond
the Pale, and maybe that’s how it
should be. The first of which we’re fond
ain’t necessarily a hit.

Written during a visit to a visit to a Bob Dylan exhibit at the Skirball Museum (“Bob Dylan’s American Journey 1956-1966) . Echo Helstrom was the name of Bob’s first girlfriend and he left Hibbing, Minnesota, for Manhattan in order to make contact with Woodie Guthrie.
