Fields Of Omagh Poem by Francis Duggan

Fields Of Omagh

He was never found wanting when put to the test
He won the big races and he raced against the best
The nine year old bay gelding has won his last race
In Australia's weight for age championship he came from last to first place.

The mighty Fields of Omagh he is a true great
His own equine history he did create
As the oldest horse ever for to win the Cox Plate
His amazing feat we ought to celebrate.

The horse that is honoured in story and in rhyme
He won his second Cox Plate many years past his prime
That the punters and tipsters had ignored him he must have not been aware
But then again horses like him are so rare.

'Twas said that his age was against him that he could not win
That ageing horses grow slower like ageing women and men
But he was not listening and where it mattered most
He was in front by a short head at the winning post.

At old Moonee Valley he will never more run
He has earned his rest he can laze in the sun
Great horses are rare and none greater than he
And in his last race he had his greatest victory.
