Father

Father

Your head low
You squat
Your hands cupped
You drink from their bowl
Cool, fresh is water

In canal
Pick in hand
There is a man
Fixing path to the spring
For water

Respect him
He is kind
Generous
Hardworking
My father

poet Charles Stuart Calverley

He stood, a worn-out City clerk —
