Farewell To The City Poem by DAVID TERRY

Farewell To The City

I checked out of the hotel not long ago
The place where we stayed all those years ago
And I walked along the streets for the last time
Trying to remember the music, memorize the rhyme

Emblazoned on my brain, engraved on my soul
This feeling I’ve had here that makes me feel old
It’s loneliness, sadness, repentance and grief
It’s living without you now, finding new belief

So I caught a cab to the airport brand new
It’s a place that would be unfamiliar to you
Renovated and brand new unlike the old place
The place where I used to meet your beautiful face

Where I looked forward to seeing you after each trip
Where I looked forward to days with you before they would slip
Now the place looks quite different, quite different indeed
Now that we’re living separate lives, separated by greed

It didn’t have to be this way but it is what it is
Since you ran away chasing his unfaithful kiss
And it makes me sad to know from now on
I will wonder if you’re happy since you chose to be gone

As I sit in the bar, here waiting for my flight
Drinking one last toast to your memory’s light
I am thankful for the times that we shared in this city
That I relegate to past, sadness, and for you now pity
