Family Comes First Poem by Mustafa Marconi

Family Comes First

In the year of the dragon
Destiny caressed her hopes
He entered inconspicuously
Shadowed by his friends
By chance a brief encounter
Love had crossed her path
Two became one
Promises were conveyed
“Family comes first”
Life was so beautiful
Miracles were fashioned
One in his image
The other in her essence
He showered them with love and affection
Constantly reiterating
“Family comes first”
Frantically awakened
By a steady stream of calls
He rises up to leave her
Revolver in his sights
Inquires on agenda
Or to other resolutions
“These guys and me are brothers”
“Family comes first”
In the year of the rabbit
Destiny destroyed her dreams
He entered most conspicuously
Surrounded by his entourage
Distraught and inconsolable
Powerless to speak
Promises once spoken
'Family comes first'
The price for noncompliance
The cost for him to quit
A bed of dying roses
While grieving mourners sing
The Old G starts his sermon
And pleads for his forgiveness
“The young man didn’t realize
That family comes first”
