Familiarity Poem by Aparna Chatterjee

Familiarity

He told me
We've known
Each other
For so many
Years…
He feels
So close
To me…

Why don't I
Feel the same
Towards him?
He asked me…

Reflecting on this
Seemingly close
Familiarity…
That makes him
Feel so close
To me…
I wonder

Just through
Emailing and
Internet chatting
How much
Do you really
Know a person?

You know him
Only when
You've
Lived with him
Seeing his
Ins and outs,
Knowing his
Whereabouts
Seeing his
Smiles and
Shouts ;)
How he
Grimaces
And pouts ;)
How he
Haggles with
Touts ;)
Addressing his
Everyday
Doubts,
Staying by him
Always…
Through all seasons,
Be those rains, floods
Or droughts…
Forgiving him
For the rules
He flouts ;)
Lest there are
‘No go back'
Fall outs ;)
Making the most
Of his depressive
Bouts and keeping
Him off those
Lousy louts…
Making him feel
Spring-fresh and
Weeding out those
Ugly sprouts…

This is
What I
Deem
As real knowing…
Living, liking and
Loving…
Staying together…
Despite everything,
A relationship maturing
Ceaselessly growing…
Pruning and gardening
To create something,
That outlasts everything
Farming and cultivating
The greener pastures
Of togetherness…
Up until
One's last days
On earth -
Before the final
Farewell of dying

And about
Knowing…
Only through
Emailing and
Internet chatting?

In this glossy
Transience of
Cyber space…
All men are as
Virtual to me…
As the surreal
Faces of God
Almighty…
