False Patriotism Poem by Francis Duggan

False Patriotism

That our Nation's sports women and men should be the best Worldwide
Has got nothing to do with our love of sport only false Nationalistic pride
'Tis not for their love of Country that individual sports people compete
But for their own self glory and for their own self conceit.

I've never waved a National flag though many in that see
The lack of patriotism that is evident in me
But am i any less silly than those who are passionate about a flag
And in someone else's glory what cause is there to brag.

The Nation's elite athletes and footballers i never do support
And if glory is only in victory then surely that's not sport
In true sport for the loser there should be an accolade
But only out of winners that heroes have been made.

And only to the winners go the applause and the cheers
The great Olympic champions may shed their joyful tears
But their jubilation is not for their Country only for themselves in their victory
A show of false patriotism that's how 'twould seem to me.
