Fairytales Retold Poem by Farina Afrin Malik

Fairytales Retold

The tall and old stone ivory tower
Made common men and princes cower
Upon the balcony stood a maiden fair
With long and shimmery golden hair
The witch’s curse had kept her locked
But her heart of gold could never be blocked
Her fame and beauty spread far and wide
And in her name many noblemen died
On winter’s eve arrived a man
In simple clothing and a dark suntan
He vowed to break the witch’s curse
Before the maiden’s situation got worse
The maiden however was not pleased
She had hoped this man would have been seized
her dream come true was to be taken away
by a knight in shining armor one day
Her happily ever was not be
Or that was what she thought, gloomily
Once saved from the wrath of the witch’s demise
the beautiful girl was in for a surprise
that man whom she had thought to be,
a beast, quite miraculously
changed into a figure of such beauty
he’d carried out his task nobly
She’d misjudged him based upon his looks
From all that she’d read in storybooks
It was wrong of her to think that way
For it did not show where her heart truly lay
The man and the princess lived happily ever after
And the rest of their lives were filled with songs and laughter.
