Eruption - Poem by Dave Pass

One day the volcano erupted without warning
It continued all night and the following morning
It shot out great flames and spat out ash, rocks and lava
This flowed down the slopes to the cottages and harbour

The sky became dark so it seemed it was night
And the ground shook and shivered which did not seem quite right
The islanders fled in an ocean going schooner
To the shores of England far from Tristan da Cunha
