Emotional Introspection Poem by Shelby Barker

Emotional Introspection

Tell me the difference between
not hurting
and being numb.
How do you know whether to
feel bad for not feeling bad
Or go on feeling nothing?
this is my dilemma
The world lost you
And doesn’t even know it
So shouldn’t I remind you your worth
By mourning?
Shouldn’t I let them know
And let you know
A hero has passed on?
You’d be too stubborn to listen, as you preach condolences,
Because everything else came first
But don’t you deserve my tears?
Oh but that was World War II,
and she’s a grandma now
You know, I’m stubborn too
And at some point I have to miss you
Shout your name into an empty canyon
Doodle angels on school notes,
At some point not be spared or justified
(I haven’t even cried.)
