Emerson declared a friend
may be the masterpiece of nature,
this candidature I would amend
and favor lover nomenclature,
for though a friend when you’re in need
is fine, and even when you’re not,
the cause of lover, I would plead,
presents a far more pleasing plot.

In the finale of the 2007-8 season of Boston Legal William Shatner and James Spader oppose one another in court where James Spader supports Concord, Massachussetts’s right to secede from the Union. William Shatner’s Denny Crane unexpectedly wins the case, defying his so-called mad-cow disease, and, resuming an interrupted friendship with James Spader, quotes Emerson: “A friend may be the masterpiece of nature.”
