Eleven Poem by Jared Carter

Eleven

warm winds
the kite's string
almost straight

summer rain
names and initials
carved in the railing

waves of heat
hitchhiker's suitcase
patched with duct tape

bamboo grove
a hundred ways
of entering

billowing clouds
the mill's overshot wheel
dark with moss

hemlocks
entrance gate
off its hinges

overcast day
bottom drawer lined
with old newspaper

morning star
the chained dog
still barking

second frost
the rattle of gourds
left on the vine

cold wind
a last few leaves
scratch at my door

acorns falling
even at this hour
someone knocks
