THE EARTH NEVER SHIFTS


The earth never shifts
to tell us our prayers
have been answered, God’s gifts
take us all unawares,
and the greatest of all
are the prayers He refuses,
declining our call
while He does as he chooses.
If He did as we begged him
to do our respect
would decline, we’d suspect Him
of this great defect,
of being dependent
of thanks for His favors:
since He is transcendent
that’s not what He savors
with pleasure. He merely
prefers to observe us.
Though we love Him dearly,
He doesn’t derserve us.
