Drunk Poem by Rebecca Duncan

Drunk

A strong moonless night

Its presence clear, forceful

I run a dark and unseeable path

Undulating below me, up and down

Winding ahead of me, to the left then the right

I feel for my footing uncertain and hesitant

And strain to keep pace with you as the horizon

Swallows the sun

Then I hear you breathing hard as you run up

Behind me

I wonder at your surefootedness

And of a sudden you are next to me

On the downhill edge of the path

Reaching your arms around me heavy and wet with sweat

You hold me so tightly I cannot catch my breath

Yet I struggle to breathe in your pungency

And when I do oblivion washes over me

You have intoxicated me yet again

And I turn my lips to yours to taste you tasting me

All these years later

The memory viscerally clear and

Nearly profound

Sweet oblivion

I am drunk again
