Downcast Eyes Poem by Connie Wine

Downcast Eyes

Another day has come and gone
Jimmy crossed over a few years ago
a fine young man who fell victim to the firewater
that the white man gave so freely

Born on the reservation in the Black Hills canyon
all he saw was the poverty and the sadness
stories were told of how the brave warriors fought
and how the old ways had died such a brutal death

Not allowed to hunt or practice their ways
so many turned to the easy way out
drink more of that liquor so you can forget
and not have to think about the real problems

The white man took away everything they stood for
said they were savages who needed to be contained
put them on the reservation, cut their hair and tore them apart
forbid them to speak their native tongue or practice their beliefs

Jimmy let the white man win in his personal battle
finding it easier to give in then to fight
he became addicted to the liquor and the drugs
fighting with his own people was just part of a normal day

He has lost his battle here on this earth
but I see him standing tall on the other side
he is a Lakota Sioux warrior singing with his ancestors now
tall, brave, strong and full of pride

The white man has lost that battle
