Dora Sigerson Poem by Francis Duggan

Dora Sigerson

Though with the dearly departed for over eighty years she lay
The poems of Dora Sigerson are alive and read today
In her fifty two years life span she was famous and well known
And the Irish rightly feel proud for to claim her as their own.

One of the marvellous wordsmiths to belong to Ireland
She wrote in simple language that a child could understand
Yet her verses have feeling as well as beauty rare
And few of her contemporaries with her one can compare.

She was a genuine wordsmith and a poetic great
And the poems of Dora Sigerson will never be out of date
They have in them such freshness and originality
As fair as the pink blossoms on the green camellia tree.

Those who know about poetry will have heard of her by name
For the women of her era she lit the poetic flame
The gifts that she was born with something money cannot buy
And her legacy of beauty is for all to enjoy.

For young poets a role model others she did inspire
And for reading the poems of Dora I for one could never tire
With the best of her era she is one you can rate
And she is still remembered as a poetic great.
