Die Ou Wyndrinker

*English translation in notes below*

toe my bokkie weg was, in 'n oneerlike gemors

Maar my hart, my hart is weg in Stellenbosch

Poet's Notes about The Poem

*English Translation: *

*The Old Wine Drinker

*I pray for rain in the Boland
*so that the grapes can grow, for more wine
*I sit in a pub in the City of Gold
*with a broken heart and a bottle of pain

*The music of the band flows through the bar
*and the tunes take me back to Stellenbosch
*And if they ask: 'Who's the guy that's crying so? '
*It's just me, the old wine-drinker Hannes de Vos

*I leave the beautiful Western Cape
*when my girl went away in a dishonest mess
*I thought I'd get work and forget her
*But even in Johannesburg, the hole in my chest remains

*The band plays on, with passionate swing
*But my heart, my heart is lost in Stellenbosch
*The world begins to drift and spin
*Around me, the old wine-drinker Hannes de Vos.

*English Notes:

Simple Afrikaans poem, with numerous South African references. It depicts a general experience of a Maties (Stellenbosch University) student, that has lost love in Stellenbosch. The pain lingers on, until long after the sunny days of university.
