Diamonds At Seventeen Poem by Elena Sandu

Diamonds At Seventeen

Once upon a time
There was a little girl
who wore diamonds
on her fingertips.
She was born with those
Year by year growing
She was now,17!
On each finger, a
17 cm diamond simply worn
Just as today's girls
Wear the coloured nails.
Diamonds of no inconvenient
The young girl could use
Her fingers just as anybody would.
Righteous, were stronger
She needed no gloves to take
Out of the oven
a freshly baked cake.
Imagine by yourself
All other things you could do
With those diamond fingers!
But!
Her heart was heavy
She had to live
Hidden in caves.
She'd come out only at dark
When the moon stayed
behind the clouds
those were the only times
that she won't spark. Otherwise
The people would reach
for her diamonds
Try to cut those off
Or asking her into marriage
to become a circus displayed thing,
or some sort of …
And so she would need
to run and hide again.
She had her freedom but
Longed for love
Desired friends
Sadly, none she could have.
Because on the finger tips
Grown diamonds she wore…
Till one day
Seen some sparkles
Reflected in the water of a cave.
Those were the fingers of a
man.
Looked right away behind
but there was no man
and fingers, none..
Each day from then
her mind grown
new sparkles from
Imaginary Love.

Perhaps her isolation nudged her more in the direction of Imaginary Love than she would have known if she was more free to socialize? A fine, fine write, my friend.26 Jun 2014 by Nígh†mµ†€   • xThis is beautifully written. I can feel that it carries a very much deeper message. Thanks for sharing Elena and keep up the wonderful work.15 Jul 2014 by Imad Black • I can see a quill writing this beautiful poem, the words magically formed 8 Nov 2014 by Chris G. Vaillancourt |
