December Days Poem by Ernestine Northover

December Days

Rating: 5.0

A foggy day, the dampness clings,
The cold seeps in to abuse the bones.
A soggy day, a rain’s shower rings
With music filled with many tones.

No view to see, all is obscured.
The distance is not in my sight.
No blue to see, I’m not assured
That it will clear and give respite.

The scene is vanishing ahead of me,
Mists floating everywhere you glance.
A screen is banishing the shrubbery,
And therefore there is no advance.

It’s found, this haze on December days,
When temperatures move up and down.
It’s fogbound on the carriageways,
And all across the old hometown.

An eerie feeling steals around,
Unsettled emotions haunt the mind.
One cheery thought, just to be shelter bound,
And back with earth’s own humankind.

Ernestine, I may have mist grabbing this the other day before you took it away. However the wait for it to come back was well worth it. You have caught the mood well with fog and rain. As our friend T says we have the warmth of a new year to look forward to. Plenty of sunshine in 2008. Well we can only keep our fingers crossed and hope. Top marks and thank for sharing this finally. Happy New Year 2008 and both Vera and I hope to see you again sometime within in it. Love and Hugs David xxxx

I feel so mean (sitting in 38º heat with the fan blowing) as I read your finely crafted description of fog and soggy mist and damp and dreary winter. And yet your final stanza reminds me that there is always home and hearth, irrespective of the temperature outside. Beautifully composed poem. love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ .
