Decelerando Poem by gershon hepner

Decelerando

Palpable as cellos the sensation
of absence that’s implied
by Schubert in C Major, his ovation
for those who've not yet died.

Hail all the near-departed fellows
while the ensemble plays,
decelerando, and two cellos
describe what word can’t praise.

Inspired by Steve Smith's review of a farewell recital by the Guarneri Quartet at the Metropolitan Museum. Schubert's great C Major Quintet, was the final work, with David Soyer joining Arnold Steinhardt, John Dalley, Michael Tree and the only musician who was not part of the original ensemble, the cellist Peter Wiley.
