Death Toll Poem by Nkwachukwu Ogbuagu

Death Toll

It rises daily
On frontiers held hostage by death.
Piling up upon putrescence, alcoholic
Senescence regroups on formaldehyde,
Posting fumes on wreckages here and
Elsewhere among a frazzled earth.
Rashes develop on the skin of death,
Mangled by atomic leverage borne by
Lesions – scarred and bandaged on
White-and-blood crepes.
There’s sense in the senselessness of
Death toll, which rises despite formless
Formaldehyde, hiding in chests of humus,
Crumbs of air and saliva of waters.

'Here's the news':

Death toll rises.
