Death In Their Eyes Poem by Juan Olivarez

Death In Their Eyes

Shackled and cuffed, violent criminals,
Sitting by their dead comrades.
Violent criminals, looking for a better life,
Looking away from death and a miserable existance.

Violent criminals, fleeing violence, fleeing death.
Violent, men, women, and children,
Lying dead on the side of the road,
Survivors cuffed and shackled, awaiting deportation.

And the ones, covered with tarps,
On the side of the public road,
The violent criminals that sought a better life,
The ones with death in their eyes.
