Dear You: Poem by Michelle Dragonfly

Dear You:

I'm speaking to you.
Yes, you.
I know what you've done,
What you've seen,
What you've said,
What you've thought.

Now, now.
Those aren't nice things you're thinking.
Yes, those thoughts.
Those words that just accidentally slipped
Off of your tongue.
An accident, you say?
Hmph. Sure.
That's what they all say.

You say you're innocent.
You only did it once, so you're fine.
You only say it sometimes,
So it's okay.
You aren't like them,
Watching that stuff
Every
Single
Day.

But that doesn't make it okay.
Doesn't make it any less awful.
Is an action okay
Just because it's occasional?
If that's the case,
Suicide
Is harmless.
They only killed themselves
Once.
Didn't they?

A life
Is worthless.
They were only born
Once.
Weren't they?

Love doesn't count!
You only fall in love
With another human
Once.
Don't you?

And nothing really matters.
After all,
It only
Happens
Once.

But they tell us
It all matters!
If everything matters
But nothing matters
Then what are we
To believe?

Nothing and everything
All at once.
We don't really know much.
But that's okay.
These things only happen
Once.

Dear you.
I'm talking to you.
Questioning you.
It's only happening once.

Sincerely,
Life.
