Day On Battlefield Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

Day On Battlefield

Rating: 3.5

It was a day on battlefield
Fierce battle was on and ground firmly held
'Not an inch of holy land must be occupied'
At any cost by enemy and must be repulsed

We were told only previous day to move
To go in for search drive and remove
If they were found any where near our post
To throw them back from their foot holds at any cost

Country was at war with lots of anxiety
Enemy was intending to capture and ready
To occupy the land and then stake the claim
For lost territories in past as sole aim

Youngsters were told to enlist for military services
They were reminded of their duty and promises
'To uphold the dignity and integrity' as sacred mission
There was no other option left but to halt transgression

We were firmly dug in when one shell came near by and exploded
It had devastating effect and near by land was deeply holed
We doubled the power of mortar and hurled grenades at troops
They were inching forward to foil our attempts and stop

'Water, water' I heard the somebody's voice in pain
The mortar had shattered his legs when he tried to gain
There was immense fire power and I had to concentrate
I rushed to him to provide some water much to the risk of my fate

'Hold back' came the instruction from the command post
Consolidate and regroup as it is warranted and must
We understood the scene and gravity of the situation
There was no fun in holding it bravely for continuation

I saw clear death in his eyes as the time was running out
I was not in position to render any help but to turn about
He was my helplessness and told me to go back without a moment
I withdrew with all ammunitions but till the date I silently resent

The war was over and we were all safe when final counting was over
We were firmly in control of holy land and had provided safe cover
There was nothing much be done except to cry over dead comrades
There were true sons of land but now had gone away and faded

I dropp few tears silently when go for any celebration
It is more holy to have the peace than to live with strained relations
Who benefits from the destruction and sale of weapons?
Super powers gain as it is immaterial lost the ground or won?

war never brings a good result... we fight our very brothers and sisters over things that dont last, and dont matter... manipulated by the greed of the war machine... peace, at all costs!
