Dark Shadow - Poem by JJ Evendon

Hello illness, my unwanted friend.
I've woken up with you again.
The pain I feel is slowly creeping
taking over my body even when I'm sleeping
for visions are no longer vivid in my brain
What a shame.
Moved by sounds of silence.

In my dreams, I'm painfully alone.
Silhouettes of people dressed in stone.
They all stand holding out a lamp
to shine light on the cold and damp.
I am afraid of waking and never seeing the light
only darkness of night.
The quiet touch of silence.

Under a new sun, I was amazed at what I saw
for there were clouds with angels and more.
I could talk to them ….....without speaking.
I could hear them …........without listening.
I could feel their love waiting to be shared.
only if I dared.
Hearing only sounds of silence.

Said the angel: "I want you to know,
the cancer within which slowly grew
and brought an early death to you
has now become a new light from you."
Re-born from the space of where I fell
soon echoed
with rings of silence.

And though many people prayed
to the belief of the god they made.
It comes as a warning
that cancer will keep forming.
For signs of the missing are long written on hospital walls
and old peoples halls.
All whispered in the sounds of silence.

More then any other sickness cancer is the harsh reality of looking at mortality, reading this was painful but the wording was beautiful and stellar, you took a S and G classic, and made it into something even more haunting. Congratulations this poems deserves exposure as Poem of the Day, I wish you good luck. (Report) Reply

I knew there was a familiar ring to this piece. Your application to the circumstances of cancer is creative; especially the haunting repetition of silence is so applicable to the quiet devouring of the disease. (Report) Reply

I'm going through the same thing. Not a lot of pain yet but its always there as a reminder. It sucks. Cancer, not the poem. (Report) Reply

Here is the song with the original lyrics
    The Sound Of Silence
by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dare
    Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools” said I, “You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence”

    Dark Shadow
Reminds me so much of Simon and Garfunkel's song 'Sound of Silence'. That must have been your inspiration. I wish you had included a poet's note explaining why you wrote this poem.
In any case, if it is based on truth and you are indeed battling cancer, I wish you the best.
Congratulations for having it chosen as poem of the day!
