Dark Passenger Poem by bill panelo

Dark Passenger

Your Dark Passenger

He has been with you all your life yet you have never been introduced
In times of distress and anger he begins to seduce

The darkness consumes your mind and clouds your judgment
It haunts you with every breath you take
Begging to be released as you feel your soul awake
Your heart shivers and the mind breaks
As you’re inner demons come into fruition
You find yourself in an interesting position

Oh why have you made that terrible decision?
How can you commit this terrible act?
You reply, 'I sold my soul to the devil
I signed a suicide pact

But I do not want this dark passenger with me anymore
Not since I have found so much more'
But when you try to escape
He constricts your mind and changes its shape

When you reawaken you are left with the pieces
And that haunting laughter in your mind never ceases

You shake your fists senselessly at the sky
You raise your voice and call out why
But you have forgotten how to cry
Forgotten how to live and how to die

When you are feeling down do you surrender and let the current sweep you away?
Or do you fight your way through and live to fight another day?
When you feel your heart in a free fall
Take a second, breath, and let go of it all
For that one moment you feel free and weightless
You expand your wings to fly
But when you look over the edge you feel death’s caress
Do you let it all go by?
Do you take that leap of faith?
In hopes it will transcend you into a better place
