Daddy Part One Poem by Tess Connor

Daddy Part One

I remember when I was little daddy, I asked you what that was
You said “that’s not good for you”, daddy you said that just because
I have always looked up to you daddy, you were the bestest bloke
Until it occurred to me daddy, that a smoke is a smoke...
It’s no good for anyone daddy! Why did you lie?
Grandpa is in hospital daddy, because of smoking and could die!
We went over to visit him daddy, and saw just how bad he looks
How could you want to be like that daddy? you are now in my bad books
No matter how angry I seem daddy, I really love you inside
I just don’t want to find out daddy, that you, my old man has died
Smoking may seem cool daddy, but I assure you that it’s not!
If you go to heaven soon daddy I will miss you more than a lot
I really want you to be here daddy, stay here for a while
I want you to be the one daddy, who walks me down the aisle
Please try to do the right thing daddy, try to give up smoking
Or else you will be fifty, fifty in hospital and choking
I feel really bad about this daddy, to wish this upon you
But we both know it’s the truth daddy and all others know it too
If stop it now daddy you may still have a chance
To make it to my wedding and do the wedding dance
You started smoking young daddy I know it’s hard to give in
But can’t you think about others daddy, like Archie; “Poppy Jim! ”
Writing this breaks my heart daddy, but we both know that it’s true
Smoking takes peoples’ lives daddy, takes lives just out of the blue
Think of those around you daddy no one wants you dead
Why couldn’t you have been something else daddy? Like a gambler instead...
You have so much to live for daddy, good kids, wife, job and mates
I just don’t want you to turn daddy, turn around when it’s too late
When the time does come daddy, the time to let you go
I will be dying from inside out and yes daddy I will let it show
Can’t you be a normal daddy, a father who respects his body?
And not be struggling to breathe with your arteries all clotty
Although you may not see it daddy, everyone cares about your life
If you caught me smoking, I would be in strife
But don’t you worry about me daddy, I am smart enough to make all the right choices
Why don’t you listen to us daddy? Can’t you hear all of the voices?
Writing this poem is hard daddy, it’s bloody hard but I try
Please just give up smoking daddy; I really don’t want you to die!
You mean the world to me daddy, but your arteries are filling up fast
But you can change the future daddy; forget what’s in the past
Just call the smoking quit line daddy; please call them before it’s too late
When I looked at grandpa daddy, I thought it could be you in that state
It kills me to see you like this daddy, enjoying every puff
It disgusts me to hear you say daddy; “don’t you start this stuff”
As if I would daddy! That crazy stuff like you
I am not a dumb kid daddy I will not die too
Anyway please read this daddy, I’m writing to let you know
No one wants you gone daddy, so please don’t let it be so.
