Dad Poem by Ron Knight

Dad

Rating: 5.0

You left green tomatoes
Under grey skies
As the day over-took us
There were no words goodbye
In the long hours that followed
As we rode through the rain
We opened our treasures
Again and again
As I was watching
The breeze blow through the trees
I was thinking about something
That you took away from me

You left crosswords in the kitchen
Books on a chair
Those green tartan slippers
And glasses he would wear
The car in the backyard
Tools in the shed
Keys on the hook
And the cane near the bed
As I was looking out my window
Out across the sea
I was thinking about something
That you took away from me

You left the golf putter in the closet
Golf balls and bowls too
Pictures to treasure
Of family and friends that he knew
Recipes in the kitchen
The cats that he'd fed
Wife who still loves him
Comics that he'd read
As I was listening intently
While the rain made me sad
I'd give all of these treasures
If you'd give back my dad!
