Crystal Meets World Poem by Nika McGuin

Crystal Meets World

Rating: 5.0

When it happened
I thought, lord!
what's the world coming to?

I knew things were bad
but you see, at the same time -
I really didn't

I had been floating around
in my own crystal bubble
thinking, this world could never touch me

But, then it happened,
happened out of the blue, in a shocking way
the world - crashed into my bubble head on
and shattered it, to crystal bits

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This was unfortunately inspired by someone I'm very close to getting shot/grazed in the leg back in august. It just happened to fall close to his birthday. He was leaving one of his frequented night clubs and stopped to talk to a friend of his. Suddenly there was a drive-by and one of the stray bullets grazed his leg. This poem is my reaction of shock to these events.

Your poem is a sensitive way to make us think outside our normal frame of reference. It coaxes us, it invites us, it nudges us in the right direction. But the prose account of what really happened is a slam in the face, like being shaken forcefully. DON'T YOU REALIZE ANYONE CAN BE HIT, AND YOU'RE ANYONE. nOW DO YOU GET IT! !
