Corpus Christi Poem by Paul Sebastian

Corpus Christi

A people delivered wandered in wilderness
As they journeyed towards the Promised Land
Forty years sojourn in lands of nothingness
Yahweh led the return through Moses' hand
Marvels of Almighty in desert displayed
Manna for pancakes, from above given
Water to drink out of the Rock sprouted
Yet people murmured, became disobedient
Yahweh remembered His promise to Abraham
From Pharaoh's hand Yahweh would deliver them

Moses sang, Miriam and women danced
Extolling God's greatness, His mercy praised
The Passover, door-post blood, they recalled
Eating unleavened bread, the lamb shared
How Abraham's only son's sacrifice, spared
How ram caught in the bush sacrificed, instead
Shielded by fire band, crossed the divided sea
How horsemen on chariots, drowned in sea

(The Truth Revealed)

At Passover Meal rite with disciples, Jesus offered
On table, blessed, broke unleavened bread as His body
Again looked up, blessed, offered wine as His blood
Old is but replaced with the new offertory

(The One sweated blood in the garden, knew
What's to come, display God's love, He must do
Lamb of God, on cross broken, sacrificed
Weight of sins upon Himself, in man's stead
Man is saved by the Blood of the Lamb, shed)

Sacrament constituting two visible signs
The Holy Eucharist, on table Christ instituted
Real flesh and blood, from bread and wine
Today, the first offering on altar is reenacted
As a communion with Christ single Body
Living Bread, offering redemptive love
Paschal sacrifice, done in His memory
Reconciling man with The Father above

Holy Eucharist received worthily
Gives man life and life eternally
Living God comes to man, to abide
Bearing witness, working alongside
But, can do nothing, if man set Him aside!
