Copying Poem by Lonnie Hicks

Copying

We had between us the secret look
or perhaps it was thrown out
from my secret imaginings
or my own secret longings
and upon you
I merely attached longings tentacles.
Therefore I,
ever the reckless imaginer,
seek to verify
because
my heart
so easily
falls in love.

A gentle maneuver
and I am at your side
at the water cooler
breathing gently
and you synchronize
effortlessly
our heart beats
blend
at least I think so
and you spoke to me
that first day
intoning
'We are out of paper.'

It was not so
but I
a 21th century hero
draw out the paper tray
and you pretend amazement
the universal sign
of mutual interest
and you never look
at me directly
but move close
so I can smell you
and you want me to smell you
because smell
enchants
and I
put my calloused hand out
ignoring my paper cut
as any hero would
and we
stand
side by side
in front of the zerox
two against
the technology
we so
much
depend
upon.
