Conditioning Poem by Adrianne Quinlan

Conditioning

Rating: 0.5

Extra strength aspirin could not alleviate
My slumped over gait. I approached the sign:
Mattress Sale Today. Ding!

Odd having a baby-safety-gate in a mattress store!
'The purple one. I'll take the purple one, please -
With the pretty pink flowers.'

'You've got to see this, ' the shop owner says.
He whistles. Two huge beasts, black and sleek,
Clear the gate in one leap.
'Oh! Nice, nice, demonstration.'
Ding! Ding! Ding!

Six months later the pretty pink flowers
Have begun to fade, and jagged springs
Scrape my thighs; I drive by the mattress store.
Mattress Sale Today.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
I drive away!
