Complicated Poem by Nika McGuin

Complicated

Rating: 2.8

Amongst all the sadness
and missing of other people
you came and raised my spirits

You are
the little brother
I used to, almost have
the connection that is complicated
and difficult to explain to outsiders

I hope we can always
get along like this

This reminds me of a poem I heard Nikki Giovanni read about a neighborhood kid who said to her out of the blue, You should write a poem about ME! She did and he thought it was pretty good. What reminded me of Nikki Giovanni's is the complete lack of pretension in both poems and both young men. This is especially true in the closing stanza with the simple sincerity of your hope, and yet the stanza before it has detailed the complications of this rapport and so the simplicity of expression at the end is a small victory. My best wishes to Qwa - may he prevail always!
