Compassion… Poem by Betty Jo Hilger

Compassion…

Rating: 5.0

He waits beyond the shore, standing… beckoning…
With outstretched arms, open hands, and patient eyes
While I drag the chains of unmet dreams behind my aching soul
Too caught up in my pain to see the sky

He whispers love and peace by breathing out the wind
Brushing me with love as his fingers toss my hair
While I crawl inside self-pitying and revel in my grief
Unaware that he is here to steal my care

Long-suffering and so serene, he stands within the flood
Holding back the waters by force of grace and strength
While I sink and think I’m drowning in my puddles of lost hope
Not grasping that I’m only ankle deep

Still he lingers, and content, he summons me to come
To lay my earthly burden at his feet, to be set free
His love is unconditional, endurance, infinite…
Until the day I rest, he’s there for me

And he will wait…
Until I see…
