Colour Blindness Poem by Simon Samuda

Colour Blindness

Race ought not play a role,
In the assessment of an individual.

This commendable thought on racial conduct,
Is considered to be civil.

The historically discriminated,
Agree with these sentiments,

Yet still we take issue.

First, to get too this utopianism,
And get beyond race,
It is paramount,
One takes race into account.

To ignore historic discriminations,
Is tantamount to an admission of racism.

My detractors shout race card, foul.

They contend,

In order to make race irrelevant,
One must make race irrelevant now.

To engage in this poetic discourse,
I desire for you to feel remorse.

It’s about correcting past wrongs,
As oppose to an intellectual intercourse.

Poetry presents things in an order,
To convey feelings in particular,
Moreover to stimulate behaviour.

Stephen Lawrence
Trayvon Benjamin Martin,
Emmett Louis Till.

To stop discrimination on the basis of race,
Is too stop discrimination on the basis of race.
