Clown Poem by Smoky Hoss

Clown

Rating: 4.0

No one wears a mask
like a clown.
"Always be happy
when anyone is around."-
And no one else weeps
like the happy-go-lucky do,
when the pretend laughter
is all through-
When the joker removes his mask
and shows the self, sad and true,
who will stay and look
willing to bear together the real, the blue-
No one wears a mask
like a clown,
and no one cries as much
when found to be all alone-

"Behind the eyes of each person is the incommunicable loneliness of the self." - Joseph a. Sittler

on your poem and the quote at the end, smoky, each of us is indeed alone in an existential sense (though i tend to think aloneness and loneliness are different) . this is why, i think, we hunger for connection. but even in intimate and long-lived relationships, in my case with my wife, we've been married nearly forty-three years, the aloneness doesn't go away. -glen
