Cliché Poem by Simon Lawson

Cliché

Rating: 5.0

Tell me do you love me?
In that all too cliché way?
My lips are rosebuds and fireworks play in your head?
From now until oblivion, and in life after death.
You'd walk a thousand miles and sail a thousand seas?
Gosh I hope not.
Promises are one thing,
heartfelt action is another.
Be original, even if it isn't elegant.
Love me as you learn to,
not as you're told.
Love me in small, pragmatic, everyday moments,
not in huge and rare extravagance.
Walk with me to my bus stop.
And squeeze my hand.
Wink at me before an interview,
tell me when you're bored or upset.
Or if that jumper is really not your thing.
Develop habits with me, rhythms and routines.
I'm not asking you to be mundane,
or to change your charming ways.
I'm asking you to love me, in a manner that isn't cliché.
