Citizens And Subjects Poem by Gedion Onyango

Citizens And Subjects

We are not tribal, neither are we racist
we don't discriminate with our religions
we are a great people of sound mind and conscience
we are a creative population of great ambitions

…The citizen continued……..and subjects listened……..

As they attentively yearned
and hunted for hope in the forest of his words
Their erosive tears which had tried was soon after reignited
the other day……just like other days before
the devilish night shootings of their fellows
straightened their lifeless beings on the bloody soaking sands
and flattened for good by the holy bullets of ‘Jihadists'
in the neighborhood
Now, these days......
when you cannot recite a verse from the Arabic scriptures
In this country, your life can be taken from you at any time
It has been turned into a religious matter that never…..
and will never matter
But that's not what we, the Muslims believe in
we believe in sanity like other believers
we believe in life
we believe in unity
and we believe in peace

Not only them or us.......NO.

But the whole community of subjects
those whose sweats and labor
pay for the luxurious livelihoods of citizens
the subjects whose cars and bicycles are shoved aside
by the powerful sirens of the citizen's convoys of big black cars
the subjects whose multitudes of deaths just make a short sad story
these subjects whose dead bodies are known only in numbers
and not in names feed their
Lazy,
Merciless
Ignorant and
Arrogant citizens
These killers are not welcomed in our midst…….however…….
…..the citizen continued…………
All these are your responsibility
your deaths by the terrorists…….are your responsibility
we, the citizens, cannot guarantee your security
even though we have killed 100 jihadists,
we cannot find their bodies
even though they came and killed you
you were already warned
your deaths are your responsibility
…….but if a citizen dies…. It is a big lose
A subject is never mourned…….and their deaths
are just a parcel of good politics
