Before the square Cicada Sound
Inside the square Cicada Sound
The sounds of nature
Melodious
Smooth and cheerful
Opening and enlightening human mind
Resounding through the heart

Praise you, Cicada Sound
But that is not the point
Thousands and thousands of words
Flow into three words-
Hello, Cicada Sound
Sincerely welcome you back.
I'll wait for you every year in May

Cicada Sound, you come back
But Small Green Crying Birds don’t come back

That year
The prevalence of bird flu
Inside a large banyan tree
Lush
Sprinkling
In clatter flied up
Several hundreds Little Green Crying Birds
And in clatter flied down
Spectacular
Shook my precordium

Little Green Crying Birds don't come back.
And someone don't come back, too:
In my childhood memories
Little Cockchafers slumbering in the eucalyptus tree
Brown Hill-dragonflies Dancing in the air
Red Dog-ants baring fangs and brandishing claws
And that
In Chaoshan Herb-medicine Pharmacopoeia
Five Claws Catch Pearl being very familiar with our subject
Black Eye Vegetable being far from being handsome
Paederia Scandens being delicious with a long lingering finish.

Only that
Orchid Fragrance sweet-smelling
Cicada Sound prolonged
Remain unchanged!

场前蝉鸣
场内蝉鸣
天籁之音
悦耳动听
流畅欢快
睿人心智
响彻心坎

赞美你，蝉鸣
但赞美不是要点
千言万语
汇成下面三语——
久违了，蝉鸣
衷心欢迎你回来
我会每年五月等着你

蝉鸣，你回来了
但青啼仔鸟回不来了

那一年
盛行禽流感
场内大榕树
茂盛
细雨霏霏
刷啦啦飞起
几百只青啼仔
又刷啦啦飞落
壮观
振撼我心窝

青啼仔回不来了
回不来的还有：
童年记忆里
蜇伏柚加利树的金龟仔
漫天飞舞的棕山蜻
张牙舞爪的红狗蚁
还有那
潮汕草药典库
如数家珍的五爪擒珠
其貌不扬的乌目菜
味道隽永的鸡屎藤

只有那
兰香郁郁
蝉鸣袅袅
依然如故！
