Christmas Poems: Christmas Kitchen ©

Tis' days before Christmas and all through the city,
There's hustling and bustling in the Kitchen Committee;
Mama is baking, fresh Nankatais,
Jam tarts and Flans and my favourite Mince pies!

Auntie is icing, twelve Christmas cakes,
For five days and nights, she bakes and she bakes;
Cookies and Cupcakes and Cheesecakes galore,
She knows fully well, we'll be asking for more!

The sweet scent of Vanilla, drifts through the air,
and mingles with Nutmeg, like a sweet love affair;
Sister smiles gently, and pours out her Fudge,
Hot molten goodness! Taste! You be the judge!

Then wafts in a fragrance, hearty and true,
The full blooded scent of redhot Vindaloo!
My nose begins twitching, with the delectable smell,
of my golden, succulent, beloved Sorpotel!

It teases the nostrils, and tickles the tongues,
It tantalises the tastebuds, and fills up the lungs;
It transports the mind, to gastronomic bliss,
Each Sorpotel morsel, as hot as a kiss!

Then Grandma descends, with an old wooden spoon,
She's stirring up mischief, this wintry afternoon;
Ten litres of milk cream, she stirs with a passion,
Till her cheeks are all pink, and her hair...tad more ashen.

Pyramids of hot Fugias, heaped like gold roses,
melt in our mouths and taunt little noses!
Sugar crested Jujups glow and entice;
Here, take a handful, one won't suffice!

And Dada is smiling while snoring in bed,
while visions of Potato-chops, waltz in his head;
And Brother gobbles Mazapao, while cleaning the ledges,
and nibbles on Macaroons, while pruning the hedges.

And Cousins are coming, from far distant lands,
hugging and kissing, and shaking our hands;
With all sorts of presents, and goodies to eat,
How nice to have family, to greet and to meet!

The sweet heady fragrance, of pink Coconut Ice,
floats through our home, with hints of pure spice;
At Christmas, our home, is a cauldron of flavour,
to herald the birth of our Jesus, our Saviour!
