Childhood Pets Poem by norman hale

Childhood Pets

When I was a kid I wanted a pet
So I thunk and I thunk and I thunk
Until one day I finally wet out
And I caught me some skunks

They was just little babies
Their mom was dead on the road
She could no longer feed them
For she was flatter than a toad

So I took them home
And fed them some milk
And their little hair
Was just as smooth as silk

I put them in a bucket
Covered them with a towel
Then I went to bed
The adventure started now

The next morning I get up
My brothers shirt was hangin on the chair
All soaked with skunk pee
For he had dared to venture there

He gave me a cussin
Like I aint never heard
I told him they was just babies
And was as harmless as a bird

I raised them boys
For a good many years
I named them blacky and sam
And they brought me many cheers

I have caught many grown ones
And yet to get sprayed on
But my older brother paul
They sprinkled him like the lawn

I always picked them up
Much like a dog or cat
And they would rub and lick
Like they was telling me they loved me back

I never had a cold
When I had my skunks either
And I was always outside
No matter what the weather

Some say I'm crazy
Because I like the smell of skunks
But it's just a nature smell
At least that's what I thunk

I've had all kinds of wild pets
From geese to fox to possum to coon
I even have pics of a badger thing
And I once caught a loon

My favorite pets consist of
mink, geese, flying squirrels
skunks pigeons, doves and coon
groundhog, and fox squirrels
