Chicago Serenade - Poem by William Weiyi Marr

Evening
a desolate street

A car with its windows tightly rolled up
stops for the red lights

Suddenly
in the rear-view mirror
a dark figure
looming

Sir, buy...

The ashen driver
steps in fright on the pedal
and rushes through the red lights
like a rabbit running for its life

... buy some flowers
today's Valentine's Day

(1985, Chicago)

The Chinese version:

芝加哥小夜曲

黃昏冷清的街頭
蠻荒地帶

一輛門窗 緊閉的汽車
在紅燈前緩停了下來

突然
後視鏡裡
一個黑人的身影龐然出現

先生,買…

受驚的白人司機
猛踩油門
疾衝過紅燈
如野兔逃命

…買把花吧
今天是情人節

The French version:

SÉRÉNADE DE CHICAGO

C'est le soir,
Une rue déserte.

Une voiture aux vitres hermétiquement closes
S'arrête à un feu rouge.

Tout à coup
Dans le rétroviseur
Un silhouette noire

Apparaît.

Monsieur, achetez...

Le chauffeur, tout blême,
Appuie effrayé sur la pédale.
Il brûle le feu

Fuyant comme un lapin

Qui craint pour sa vie.

… Achetez-moi des fleurs
Aujourd'hui, c'est la Saint-Valentin!

(Translated into French by Athanase Vantchev de Thracy)
