Cheated Childhoods Poem by Della Perry

Cheated Childhoods

Rating: 5.0

Cheated of childhood
Sharks ripped a toddler to shreds
Screamed at the paternal threads were sliced.
A tiny egg, cracked apart,
Blood seeping around an unformed bird
One large, grey eye
Minute body
A little tail.
So much like the human fetus, unborn
Cheated of childhood.
Regrets abound, a prayer
Teenage years untold
Unread, unedited.
An adult weeping in bed
So much left unsaid.

Screamed at the paternal threads were sliced............. as the.......? this is a very worthy addition to 'pro-life' literature. i happen to be 'pro-choice', but abortions would be nicer if there was never a need/desire for one to occur. let's have more education, availability of contraceptives, and counseling, and adoptions instead [if only there were enough willing adults who wanted to adopt all the babies who would otherwise be 'up' for adoption after being given up at birth or abandoned or abused and 'taken away' later]! sure, abortion may be over-used by some people who are unfortunate and/or irresponsible, but as things stand, i feel, for those who choose it, it should be available. does either the human or bird fetus feel the pain? we may not ever know. but it is sure (to me) that without abortions, much more pain (physical and emotional) will be meted out to children and adults. I’m not clear on you use of “toddler”. I assume “sharks” are “the abortion” or “the abortionists”. let’s agree to disagree somewhat over the abortion issue, but I do like the poem. I shall add it to MyPoemList. bri :) p.s. i've known several women who have had abortions and i think it was good that they had them. none needed one because of ME!

This poem is so very powerful as emotions saturate every line...so much left unsaid indeed, it casts the reader into an abyss of the past where sorrow and regret are alive and well. Great poem! !
