Chalkboard Thoughts Poem by Susan Lacovara

Chalkboard Thoughts

Rating: 4.8

A punchlist, checklist, layman's log
Scrawled daily by my hand's design
Of how to manage time
And to remind
The milk's gone sour
And at which hour
The doctor expects to examine my chest
And who I'll wish best
Birthday greeting to
Preparing a stew
I'll need root vegetables
And other edibles
For the dog and the finicky cat
No matter that...
I'll gloss over what's there
Filling the air
With aromatic fragrance of feeling
Your breath on my neck
What eles to forget
While chalkboarding my thought
So haphazardly caught
Up in the daydream of you
Missed a thing or two
When reading my scribbling
I find I am whittling
The hours away
As if a staged play
Act two, to begin
With your entering grin
My list fails to matter
Lost in far away chatter
Tomorrow again, I will start and end
While busied, by nothing but him

This is such a wonderful mix of the ordinary and the extraordinary in life, at first it seems like it's going to be all about the quotidian and then suddenly the memory of the beloved enters the poem and the speaker is exhilarated, and so are we. I like the way you understated that closing scene; we don't need a lot of details to realize how different the atmosphere is with HIS PRESENCE added because the exhaustive list of ordinary stuff has prepared for the liberation he represents. Your Love Poems, Susan, are so remarkable. Each one has its own special take on the experience but they are all affirming the wonder of love and convey the most wonderful feelings to the reader. Like me! They'e glowing poems!
